Career Interests & Aspirations

5 Year Career Plan

After completing multiple student placements in varying fields (Green Star certification, tourism policy, lecturing assistant and national development assessment planner) I have come to the conclusion that my abilities are best suited towards land use planning. Therefore, my 5 year career plan consists of:

  1. Further upskilling through student placement positions (0-1 years);

  2. Seeking a Graduate Position (0-2 years);

  3. Working my way towards senior/ managerial positions (1-3 years);

  4. Transition into open space/ parks managerial roles (3-5 years); and

  5. Find employment in urban design/ open space roles (5+ years).

This 5 year career plan will aid a possible transition back into study/ research.

Career Interests & Aspirations: FAQ

What is your long term career aspiration?

My long term career aspiration is to become a university lecturer, specialising in environmental psychology (the psychology of people-place interaction).

I believe this aspiration reflects my passion for presenting, teaching, mentoring and researching relatively well.

Have you considered further study?

In short, yes.

I am currently on track for a First Class Honours for my thesis on 'The Awareness of Depressogenic Built Environments in South East Queensland', and if successful, I can apply for scholarships to complete a PhD in Environmental Psychology.

However, it is a matter of timing as I want to enter the workforce before completing a PhD.

Do you want to work locally or further afield?

As much as I have a passion for planning, my lifestyle and wellbeing is my number 1 priority. Therefore, I only consider locations that could foster my mental and physical wellbeing, whilst supplying a moderate income.

Such locations include:

  • Gold Coast, Australia;

  • Brisbane, Australia;

  • Melbourne, Australia; and

  • Portland, Oregon.

These locations have an abundance of state and national parks at their doorstep, great public transportation, and growing employment opportunities for planners.

Would you rather work for a private consultancy or the public sector?

Tough Question.

It depends on the employer.

Private: I admire the pace and efficiency.

Public: I admire the flexibility and strategic outlook.

Both are equally attractive.
